Reminder: 2/17; 5-6 pm (note time change) "Good Drinks" gathering "Making the most of your disaster buck"
02.16.2010 Date: Wednesday, February 17th; Fido's Hillsboro Village. (5-6ish pm) Click here for location and directions
Check out my last posting for more on the theme for tomorrow's evening discussion. We have had to move the gathering time from 5:15 to 5 pm to accommodate a later event at Fido's. I have a large table reserved in the new portion (all the way in the back) of the coffee shop where it is quieter. I will have a bottle of white and red wine on hand for participants to expedite our meeting and to lubricate our conversation. If you want coffee or beer, the barista will take your order when you arrive at their register. (As we don't have long to meet, if you plan to purchase food, beer or coffee, keep this in mind as our time is short and lines can be long.)
"Good Drinks” is an occasional gathering of interested and interesting people on important issues affecting our lives and our communities.
The conversation will begin with sharing insights and impressions of disaster funding in light of the Haiti earthquake and the subsequent relief and recovery efforts. Then we will shift the conversation to focus upon Nashville and Middle TN, sharing our vision and principles for making our community more resilient from the need for greater individual and institutional preparedness to collaboration across sectors to sharing promising practices we know that promote greater resiliency.

Will philanthropy be called upon more and more to respond to disasters, even though few funders specifically target "disasters" in their mission? With most individual funding focused upon disaster response (Red Cross has raised $255 million for relief in Haiti) and the government sector centered upon preparedness and response, gaps exist in funding long-term recovery efforts. Philanthropy will increasingly face requests from non-profits who try to make the person "whole" after the disaster whether it is housing, financial, or a human service need.
